What are the requirements to adopt in Texas?

On Behalf of | Jun 4, 2020 | Family Law |

Adopting a child is a huge responsibility, and since the child is a ward of the state, the state sets strict requirements for adoptive parents. It wants to make sure every child goes to a family and to a home that will be a safe and nurturing environment.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services explains that the basic requirements to adopt from the state foster system include having financial stability and being at least 21 years old. The state wants to ensure you are a mature and capable adult before taking on the many responsibilities adoption entails. All prospective parents must also complete the proper adoption application and paperwork.

What information does the state need?

If you’re interested in adoption, the state will require you to send information about yourself that includes details about yourself and your lifestyle. You will be asked to provide references from people related to you, as well as non-related references like colleagues or friends. You also will need to provide documentation if you are married or divorced.

In addition to all of the information you are required to send yourself, the state will also run a background check on you and any other person in your home who is over the age of 18. Some important things they will be looking for include criminal charges and any history of abuse or neglect.

Additional adoption requirements

All adoptive parents also need to undergo training to learn more about being a parent to a child who may have a background that includes abuse or neglect. The state will also visit with you and your family to conduct a home study and verify your adopted child’s safety in your household. Parents have access to free courses to help them understand what adoption is and how to determine if it’s right for their family.

If you are interested in adoption but aren’t sure how to start, contact a qualified family law attorney in your area to learn more.
